First Paid Fake Android Antivirus App Downloaded 10,000 times from Google Play Store

Well, we all are very conscious, when it comes to the security of our personal information, security of our financial data and security of everything related to us. In the world of Smart devices where our Smartphones knows more than we know ourselves.
To keep our device protected from harmful viruses, malware or spyware, we totally depend on various security products such as antivirus, firewall and privacy guard apps, that we typically install from some trusted sources, Google Play Store. Most Antivirus apps are available to download for free, but some of them are paid with extra premium features like advance firewall protection, anti theft, App Locker or Cloud Backup etc.
But do you believe that just because you're downloading an application from an official app store and also if its a premium paid version, you're safe from malicious software? Think twice.

PAID, BUT FAKE ANTIVIRUS APP
In Past, Mobile Security Researchers had spotted numerous fake mobile antivirus scanners that were available for free download at Google's Play marketplace, but its the first time when a cyber criminals are offering a fake, but paid Antivirus Solution called ‘Virus Shield’ for your Android device at Google’s play store.
Virus Shield masquerade itself as an antivirus that claims to "protect you and your personal information from harmful viruses, malware, and spyware" and also "Improve the speed of your phone," which it does with just a click. 
Moreover, it claims to have least effect on battery, run in the background, and in addition it also acts as adblock software that will stop those "pesky advertisements," which we deal every day.
MORE THAN $40,000 FRAUD AT GOOGLE PLAY STORE
Virus Shield antivirus app costs $3.99, and has been on the Google Play Store for just over a week and has already been successfully downloaded more than 10,000 times by Smartphones users with a 4.7 star review from 1,700 people, that means total amount received by developer is more than $40,000.
Even 2,607 users had hit the Google "recommend" button, which means that the antivirus app must be doing great to users who look for trusted and efficient antivirus app to secure their devices.
WHAT A SCANNER - VIRUS SHIELD 
Surely it doesn't scan or detect anything. Android Police has discovered that the app only changes a red "X" graphic to a red "check" graphic, that’s it, nothing less or more.

The virus shield antivirus app is a total scam and it doesn't scan or secure your device, which means thousands of users have been scammed out of their money.
When the creator (email : Jesse_Carter@live.com) tracked down by the investigators, it revealed that the creator was a well known scammer who was also accused and banned from forums for trying to scam people out of various low-valued online game items.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
There is no such way to protect you from these kinds of fraudsters. All you can do is report the Virus Shield via the Play Store app by listing the app’s "flag as inappropriate," then tap "other objection" and write about the app’s fraud to users. Alternatively, you can report it on the web. Users are advised to only download applications from known and trusted publishers

123456, password, 12345678, qwerty… or abc123, How many of you have your password one of these??? I think quite a many of you.
Even after countless warnings and advices given to the users by many security researchers, people are continuously using a weak strength of password chains.
After observing many cyber attacks in 2013, we have seen many incidents where an attacker can predict or brute-force your passwords very easily.
From 2012, the only change till now is that the string “password” has shifted to the second place in a list of the most commonly used passphrases and string “123456” has taken the first place recently, according to an annual "Worst Passwords" report released by SplashData, a password management software company
They announced the annual list of 25 most common passwords i.e. Obviously the worst password that found on the Internet. The Most common lists of the passwords this year are "qwerty," "abc123," "111111," and "iloveyou", which are really easily guessable.
"Another interesting aspect of this year's list is that most short numerical passwords showed up even though websites are starting to enforce stronger password policies," says Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData.

If you are also using one of these passwords or other dictionary words, then you are advised to change it as soon as possible. We further advise you to use different passwords for different accounts, as if one of your account gets hacked, you’ll be totally ruined.
The above list of passwords was compiled from data dumps of stolen passwords posted online, and the firm says it was especially influenced by the millions of Adobe accounts that were compromised in the fall.
Fact & figure
Stricture Consulting Group attempted to decrypt the leaked Adobe passwords and released an estimate that almost 2 million of the more than 130 million users affected by the breach appeared to be using "123456" as a password.
Now when you talk about various security measures to protect your privacy and data, installing an Antivirus doesn’t mean that here your work gets over and you are safe enough. “God helps those who help themselves” likewise nobody can secure your privacy unless and until you yourself not willing to.
Here I have listed some useful tips to make your password strength secure and easier to remember:
  • Use a combination of lowercase, uppercase, numbers, and special characters of 8 characters long or more like s9%w^8@t$i
  • Use short passphrases with special characters separating to make it difficult for crackers and could be easily remembered like cry%like@me (cry like me)
  • Avoid using the same combination of passwords for different websites
  • If it is difficult for you to remember different passwords for different websites and accounts than try using Password manager applications like RoboForm, 1Password, LastPass.

Now that we have enough details about how the NSA's Surveillance program, running for a long time against almost each country of this planet. 

Hundreds of top-secret NSA documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden already exposed that Spying projects like PRISM and MUSCULAR are tapping directly into Google and Yahoo internal networks to access our Emails. NSA's tactics are even capable to defeat the SSL encryption, so unsecured email can easily be monitored and even altered as it travels through the Internet.

One major point on which all of us are worrying is about the privacy of communication among each other and If you're looking for a little personal privacy in your communications you will need to encrypt your messages.
To avoid privacy breaches; rather I should say to make it more difficult for the NSA or British GCHQ surveillance program to read our communication, we should use PGP encryption (Pretty Good Privacy).

Why we should Encrypt our Emails? Each public mail service provider sends information from sender to recipient like a postcard which has a recipient’s address and the content to be conveyed; and is open to the medium used for sending the card. Encryption is an envelope of the content of the document to be sent and leave the recipient’s address open so that it can reach to the destination. So by encrypting your mail, even if any mail service provider is keeping a record of all mails, you need not to worry that your document is being read by third person neither by NSA people.

Encrypting your email may sound daunting, but it's actually quite simple. We are going to use something called GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG) or Gpg4win (Windows).
Installation
Step 1: Download the Gpg4win on windows machine and install it.

Step 2: Go ahead and after successful installation, close the window.

Generating your PGP pair key:
Step 3: Now open Kleopatra tool (A GUI GPG Key Manager) to create a new asymmetric key pair (public & private). Click on File -> New Certificate.

Step 4: In the key generation wizard, click on "Create a personal OpenPGP key pair" and in the next window enter your basic details:

Step 5: In the next window, once review your details and click "Create Key". It will prompt you for entering a passphrase. Set a strong password and confirm it once again in the next window.

Step 6: Within a few seconds (depending on your system speed), Your Key pair will be generated (as shown).

Step 7: You should "Make a backup of your file pair" somewhere safe. You can also export the public key to the public directory by clicking on the Upload Certificate to Directory Service.

Step 8: Once done, the key manager main interface will show your certificate as shown:

Step 9: Select your newly generated certificate -> Right click -> click on Export Certificates to save your Public keys on the desktop.

You will have to exchange your public keys with whom you want to make secure communication via mails. Many people post their public keys to their personal websites. You can send it as attachments to everyone you email, just so they have them.

Once your friends will have your Public keys, they can import it Kleoptra software via 'Import Certification' option from the menu.

Composing an encrypted email:
Step 1: Open Outlook -> Compose a new mail and write the recipient’s address, Subject and your message.

Note: You should already have your email ID configured over Outlook software on windows machine and if your Outlook doesn't have OpenPGP, then you can install 'Outlook Privacy Plugin' to enable it.

Step 2: Under GpgOL menu (as shown), click on 'Encrypt'. The software will automatically import the public keys of the recipient from the Key Manager (only if exists or imported before).

Step 3: If you also want to attach some files to this encrypted email, then under GpgOL menu, click Encrypted File and select the file to be attached and SEND mail.

When you or the recipient will receive the encrypted mail, one should first decrypt it using private keys.

Step 4: Under GpgOL menu, click on 'Decrypt' to convert the email into readable form. To proceed, It will ask for  the secret passphrase entered at the time of creation of key pair.

That's it! Other than Outlook you can also use various desktop email clients (Thunderbird or Postbox) or web mail, that also support PGP encryption. You can import your key pair to other software also in order to manage the same account.

According to Dailydot, Turkish journalist Erdem Arda Gunes explained how the ban was implemented to the Daily Dot. “The ban started after midnight and got into effect gradually depending which internet providers they used, but it's a court order (actually four different courts) which means every provider, including GSM companies, are obliged to implement this ban.

But still Turkey user can send tweet from Sms service, Avea and Vodafone users can text START to 2444 and Turkcell subscribers can text START to 2555, also use twitter with proxies, Vpn and SMS services.

Jarvis v0.1 (Artificial Intelligence based Operating System). Indian Cyber Security researchers has designed JARVIS. HOC talked with one of the developer named Chiragh Dewan, 18 year old, who is pursuing BCA. 
Its totally different from other OS because its function can be control by voice.

1) Introduction on Jarvis OS
Jarvis is different, because it can interact with its users using voice and gestures. It’s also a server which can be accessed by many clients (we call them nodes), so basically it's a new concept, one which is new and better than anything available in the market.

Himanshu Vaishnav and Chiragh dewan originally founded this project. We were driven by our passion about bringing Jarvis to life. We designed the system Together. This project is output of our combined efforts and our individual knowledge.

Our team consist of 7 members both founders [Chiragh & Himanshu], Vikas [AIML], Vinmay [API], Sravan [UI], Mayur [Programming].


3) Aim to make Jarvis OS
To make a new product, a new technology with a fresh approach to the technology. Our motto is making Jarvis a companion to its user, we are making a life Automation system.

Researchers Get $10,000 for Hacking Google Server with Malicious XML


A critical vulnerability has been uncovered in Google that could allow an attacker to access the internal files of Google’s production servers. Sounds ridiculous but has been proven by the security researchers from Detectify.
The vulnerability resides in the Toolbar Button Gallery (as shown). The team of researchers found a loophole after they noticed that Google Toolbar Button Gallery allows users to customize their toolbars with new buttons. So, for the developers, it is easy to create their own buttons by uploading XML files containing metadata for styling and other such properties.

This feature of Google search engine is vulnerable to XML External Entity (XXE). It is an XML injection that allows an attacker to force a badly configured XML parser to "include" or "load" unwanted functionality that can compromise the security of a web application.
The root cause of XXE vulnerabilities is naive XML parsers that blindly interpret the DTD of the user supplied XML documents. By doing so, you risk having your parser doing a bunch of nasty things. Some issues include: local file access, SSRF and remote file includes, Denial of Service and possible remote code execution. If you want to know how to patch these issues, check out the OWASP page on how to secure XML parsers in various languages and platforms," the researchers wrote on a blog post.
Using the same, the researchers crafted their own button containing fishy XML entities. By sending it, they gain access to internal files stored in one of Google's production servers and managed to read the “/etc/passwd” and the “/etc/hosts” files from the server.
By exploiting the same vulnerability the researchers said they could have access any other file on their server, or could have gain access to their internal systems through the SSRF exploitation.
The researchers straight away reported the vulnerability to the Google’s security team and rewarded with $10,000 (€7,200) bounty for identifying an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability in one of the search engine’s features.

Flappy Bird Developer Has Removed Game From the App Stores. The Vietnam based developer Dong Ngyen was created the game Flappy Bird in iOS and Android app platforms. According to BBC, He created the game in just two to three days, was making as much as $50,000 (£30,482) a day from the game's advertising revenue.

The game, which was released on May 24, 2013, was removed from both Apple's App Store and Google Play by its creator on February 10, 2014. On February 8, 2014, Nguyen announced on Twitter.
Also he said that taking down the game has "nothing to do with legal issues". On February 9, 2014, almost exactly 22 hours after this announcement, the game was removed from both Apple's App Store and Google Play. 

Flappy Bird is a side-scrolling mobile game featuring 2D retro style graphics. The objective is to direct a flying bird, which moves continuously to the right, between each oncoming set of pipes without colliding with them, which otherwise ends the game. The bird briefly flaps upward each time the player taps the screen, and the player is scored on the number of pipe sets the bird successfully passes through.

Twitter Adds Messaging To Vine Video App

Twitter has said that users of its Vine video app are now able to send their contacts private videos and other messages.  This is a clear indication that they are stepping up competition with Facebook in the mobile-messaging market.
The new introduction means that Twitter and Facebook both now offer multiple ways for their users to chat without using a basic text-messaging feature. Twitter, which also allows users to directly message one another through its main smartphone app, is adding the capacity to Vine only months after Facebook’s Instagram app has made it possible for people to do the same. Facebook has also separate Messenger software and they have already agreed to buy messaging service WhatsApp back in February 2014 for a cost of $19 billion.

The increase in use of messaging apps to communicate rather than paying for text messages, is becoming more and more commonplace, thereby making the companies that provide the service more valuable.
Rakuten has announced a deal to buy Viber Media Inc. for $900 million in back February and Snapchat the popular application for sending messages which disappear, rejected a $3 billion acquisition offer from Facebook only last year.
“From Vine’s early days, we recognized that there was a growing desire and need for private messaging on Vine…We’ve watched the community come up with some clever ways to send videos to their friends as we’ve been working on this solution.”  Twitter said in a recent blog post.
The new feature from Twitter allows Vine users to send their short videos to friends even if they are not using the appl, the company has said. Videos can also sent to multiple people, as well as those they aren’t friends with.

XBMC Beta 3 Fixes Airplay Issues

XBMC, the award winning media centre application for Linux, Mac OS X, Windows and Xbox, has reached Beta 3 and although it contains only fixes rather than features, the fixes are still worth a mention.
It is well known that Airplay support in XBMC suffered many issues ever since iOS 7 was released. However, the Foundation has now been able to purchase harware specifically for testing and developing this and other issues. As a result it looks as though most of the issues surrounding Airplay in the Beta 3 release have finally been resolved. (Unfortunately this doesn’t include Android for now.)

The other day was a big day for Microsoft users, what with the deadline for Windows XP finally arriving. Then there was the update for Windows 8.1, which was released on the same day. However, Microsoft has stopped the Windows 8.1 update for businesses relying on Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) due to a bug in the software.

From the WSUS Product Team Blog:

There is a known issue which causes some PCs updated with the Windows 8.1 Update (KB 2919355) to stop scanning against Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 (WSUS 3.0 SP2 or WSUS 3.2) servers which are configured to use SSL and have not enabled TLS 1.2.
Basically, this means that the bug might not allow updated devices to recognize future updates. It is also important to note, however, that this issue does not affect all users. The blog announcement further specifies that “only users who have enabled HTTPS and have not enabled TLS 1.2 on their WSUS 3.2 servers and who are also using these WSUS 3.2 servers to manage PCs running the Windows 8.1 Update KB 2919355 are affected by this issue“.
In case you have already made the updates, and you are one of the affected users, Microsoft provides a workaround:

If you are using WSUS 3.2 on Windows Server 2008 R2, you may perform either of the following steps to restore the scan functionality if you have deployed the Windows 8.1 Update KB2919355.
  • Enable TLS 1.2 (follow the instructions under More Information > SCHANNEL\Protocols subkey), or
  • Disable HTTPS on WSUS
If you are using WSUS 3.2 on an operating system other than Windows Server 2008 R2, you may perform the following step to restore the scan functionality.
  • Disable HTTPS on WSUS
Microsoft is working on a solution, as can be expected, and when this is released, users are advised to re-enable HTTPS on WSUS.

Engineers from Stanford University have developed what may turn out to be the next level in interactive gaming; an emotion sensing gamepad.  The handheld game controller will measure the player’s bodily processes and then alter the gameplay to make it a more engaging game.
When you are deeply involved in a video game, with the atmospherics and in-game music almost fully engaging you, does there seems to be something missing that you just can’t quite put your finger on?  The game maybe needs more interaction from you, the player.  This is where the handheld game controller, which gauges your brain activity and determines if you are bored, would come into play.

The prototype of the controller was created based upon research that was conducted in the laboratory at Stanford.  Gregory Kovacs, a professor of electrical engineering, in collaboration with Texas Instruments, worked on the product. The foremost area of research by grad students in Kovacs’ lab involves the development of practical ways of measuring physiological signals to determine the function of the person’s bodily systems.
Corey McCall, who is a doctoral candidate in Kovacs’ lab and is the leader on the game controller project, has been looking at the autonomic nervous system.  This is the emotional part of the brain, the part that changes when you get excited or bored, sad or elated. This activity, in turn, influences different parts of the body, such as your heart rate, respiration rate, temperature, perspiration and other processes. By measuring these signs, it offers a way of reverse engineering what occurs in the brain.

“You can see the expression of a person’s autonomic nervous system in their heart rate and skin temperature and respiration rate and by measuring those outputs, we can understand what’s happening in the brain almost instantaneously,” said McCall.  He said this method of sensing autonomic activity is particularly appealing, because it can be conducted by a non-invasive means. As McCall began to work out other ways to measure autonomic activity, he came to the realization that he could easily monitor people in various mental states as they played video games and that he could gather most of the data he needed directly from users’ hands.
McCall engineered a controller to suit his experiments.  He took the back panel off an Xbox 360 controller and then he replaced it with a 3-D printed plastic module which was packed full of sensors; like small metal pads on the controller’s surface, which measure the user’s heart rate, blood flow and how deeply the user is breathing. Another sensor, which was light-operated, provides a second heart rate measurement and accelerometers measure how frenetically the person is shaking the controller.  The team then need to custom-build software to read the data.  This software gauges the intensity of the game.  The game is a simple but fast-paced racing game in which the player must drive over coloured tiles in a specific sequence. The data was then compared to generate a complete picture of the player’s level of mental engagement in the game.
The controller received positive interest when it was presented at CES in Las Vegas back in January.  Partly because of the next phase of the work; using the controller to supply feedback to the console, which then would be able to alter the pace of gameplay to better suit the player.  “If a player wants maximum engagement and excitement, we can measure when they are getting bored and, for example, introduce more zombies into the level…We can also control the game for children. If parents are concerned that their children are getting too wrapped up in the game, we can tone it down or remind them that it’s time for a healthy break,” McCall said.

Although no one is saying that aircraft carriers will soon be able to fuel their jet fighters using water from the ocean, such a scenario has recently come a step closer to reality. Scientists from the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) have successfully flown a radio-controlled airplane that was running purely on fuel derived from sea water.
The fuel was obtained using NRL's gas-to-liquid technology. This involved running sea water through the group's E-CEM (electrolytic cation exchange module) Carbon Capture Skid, which removed carbon dioxide from the water at 92 percent efficiency while simultaneously producing hydrogen as part of the process. Using a metal catalyst in a separate reactor system, the CO2 and hydrogen gases were then converted into a liquid hydrocarbon fuel.

In a proof-of-concept test performed last September at Blossom Point, Maryland, that fuel was used to power an RC model P-51 Mustang's unmodified two-stroke engine. It marked the first time that the fuel had been used in a conventional combustion engine, and was made public this Monday.
The researchers are now working on upscaling the system to a commercial scale. NRL notes that apart from its use in fuel production, the CO2 could also have applications in the fields of horticulture or aquaculture.

In October 2012, a device called Memoto raised its Kickstarter goal of US$50,000 in under 5 hours and went on to raise over $550,000. Memoto went into production and began shipping in November 2013. Now called Narrative Clip, the device is a wearable lifelogging camera and a smash Kickstarter success. But is it any good? Ashacks got the opportunity to find out.
The first thing to address about Narrative Clip is the premise. It is designed to be clipped onto clothing or placed standing up somewhere and it takes a photo every 30 seconds. If the lens is visible, it is taking photos. To turn the device off, users need only place it face down on a surface. Although, by way of digital cameras, social media and the Facebook Paparazzi, we've become more comfortable with being constantly captured on camera, some people may find the passive and automatic nature of the Narrative Clip unnerving. There can be a sense that it's another device chipping away at our privacy.
Others view it as a clever means of capturing photos that they may otherwise have missed and capturing candid moments in their lives without the conspicuous intrusion of a manual camera. There are merits to both points, but for the benefit of this review we'll leave the conundrums about morality and usefulness to you, instead focusing how well the device achieves what it sets out to do.

Our Narrative Clip turned up in clean white packaging reminiscent of that used by Apple. The contents of the box were refreshingly sparse, with just a short USB cable, a manual and the camera itself. Users are directed to the set up website where the required software can be downloaded and the device can be registered. Users are also asked to download the smartphone app for iOS or Android. There is a genuine sense of simplicity about the whole process, it feels like it's been thoughtfully considered.
Indeed, rarely does a manual warrant comment in a review, but its short, image-based content furthers the sense of ease with which the device is delivered and intended to be used. It all helps to set the user at rest with a type of device that it's unlikely they will have used before.

The device itself is a lovely, understated piece of design. At 36 x 36 x 9 mm (1.42 x 1.42 x 0.35 in), it's small enough to be relatively unnoticeable when worn, but not so small as to be easily mislaid. Our device was white, although orange and gray are also available, with a black back-plate and a sturdy silver clip. The camera lens sits at the bottom front corner and the only two other features of note are a set of four LED lights along one side used for indicating battery status and photo activity, and a USB port that is covered by a sliver of black plastic (which can be a touch fiddly). There's no more to the device than is necessary and, noticeably, no buttons. To take a photo manually users need only double-tap it.
Fully charging the Narrative Clip for the first time took about an hour and a half, after which it was ready to go. I slid it onto my jacket lapel and went to get some lunch. I wore it to a gig and to work. There's a degree of self-consciousness wearing the device for the first time, but people in the street didn't seem to notice it. It's when you begin chatting to someone that they become aware of the device, which may prompt a conversation about what it is. People can naturally be a bit uncomfortable about being constantly photographed and it should go without saying that there are times to put the camera away in your pocket (which will put it into sleep mode).

The Narrative Clip uses a USB connection to upload images to the company's servers using a computer's Internet connection and, if the user wants, copy images to their computer's storage. There is no automatic wireless uploading, which is a shame, but understandable given the battery drain that the functionality would be. Unfortunately, my first photos were not immediately forthcoming. Narrative had experienced some problems "creating Moments" (as it calls the photo collections) and the opportunity to view my photos was delayed.
When I did get to view my photos, a number of things became apparent. Firstly, the camera isn't great. Narrative says it's as good as a smartphone camera, but in my opinion it's not quite at that level. Photos blur easily and are grainy in low light. This is perhaps to be expected, it's a small, limited device and the serendipitous approach to taking photos will naturally result in a lot of dross, with the occasional gem. I could live with that and it's definitely the case, as with any camera, that the more you use the device, the more you'll learn how to get better photos with it.

Depending on how you've been wearing the device, photos are also on one strange angle or another. This is corrected automatically when the photos are uploaded to the Narrative app, but not in photos that are copied to the user's computer.
You'd think, therefore, that the processed images might be downloadable from the Narrative servers, but after much searching it occurred to me that there is no means of viewing images on the Web, only via smartphone app. This is a huge miss. Narrative says you can share images via the app, but it doesn't provide any means of editing images. The inability to get your hands on the processed photos seems like an oversight at best, or consciously obstructive at worst.

Everything that happened (or didn't) after connecting the device to a computer felt like a bit of a let down. An afterthought even. The uploading software is limited and could easily have an editor/organizer built into it. Photos pulled directly from the device to a user's computer are left for the user to deal with themselves if they want to do any editing. Loading photos on the app, meanwhile, is slow and functionality is limited. Users can view sets of photos by scrolling through or via a slideshow. Photos can be deleted, marked as favorites, set as key images in the series or shared, but that's about it.
The lack of a desktop experience feels too restrictive for a device that costs what the Narrative Clip does, which brings me nicely onto that point. As I was showing the device to some friends, I asked what they thought of it. There was a feeling that it was a nice idea and that it would be a good stocking filler. A bit of a novelty that might be useful every so often. Price-wise they thought maybe £30-£60 ($50-$100).
I'm inclined to agree with most of that, though perhaps I'd nudge the price up a touch. The Narrative Clip retails for $279 (£167) though. That feels a bit steep for a camera that produces photos that are so-so at best, and then limits your access to them afterwards.
The Narrative Clip is a good concept. The execution is excellent in some aspects, but feels drastically lacking in others. Either the price needs to come down, or the quality and functionality need to go up.

July 18, 2005 The concept of a diesel motorcycle is not one that has occurred to a lot of people – at least not many have thought about it for long because despite a rich century of innovation in motorcycling, only a handful of diesel motorcycles have existed and until very recently, they have all been utility vehicles – bikes designed to get great economy on fuel of questionable quality in rugged and remote regions and said diesel two-wheelers had no performance pretensions. As we all know, diesel technology has come a long way in recent times and now the sans-sparkplug engine promises a renaissance thanks to its low emissions, good power output and low consumption ... and like so many aspects of technology, it was the muscle of the military dollar that brought the world's first modern production diesel motorcycle into being.

In the utility area of diesel motorcycles, one marque seems to have been synonymous with diesel motorcycles –Royal Enfield– the marque manufactured diesel motorcycles both before and after its move from Britain to India, and as can be seen from this web page, people just seem to like the idea of shoehorning diesel engines into Enfield frames.
On top of that, one of the most utilitarian motorcycles of all time, the Russian Dnepr, is still offered with a HATZ-Diesel engine, and there is a small but enthusiastic group of diesel motorcycle enthusiasts who manufacture their own motorcycles using diesel engines of all types.
There’s also a strong following for the diesel motorcycle in Germany, some of which are producing impressive prototype motorcycles such as this Peugeot-engined Kawasaki. But despite this strong groundswell of interest, there is currently only one modern production diesel motorcycle - a Kawasaki KLR650-based machine which is remanufactured with a diesel engine for military purposes in response to the new NATO requirements of "One battlefield fuel" with that one fuel being diesel. An initial order for 522 diesel motorcycles has already been placed by the US Marines and keen interest is being shown by the US Army, the UK Ministry of Defence and other NATO forces.
A unique technology partnership between Cranfield University and California-based Hayes Diversified Technologies (HDT) created the bike – the first bike of any kind with a purpose-designed diesel power unit.
John Crocker worked alongside project leader Dr Stuart McGuigan of the Engineering Systems Department, Cranfield University at Shrivenham, Oxfordshire to design the diesel power unit.
The challenge was to come up with a low technical risk design that was sufficiently light and powerful, and with an engine speed (RPM) range wide enough to give the level of performance required for use as a tactical vehicle.
John said: “The motorcycle also had to meet strict NATO requirements for all armed forces to operate their entire inventory of vehicles and powered equipment on either diesel fuel or aviation grade kerosene.
“This capability has major logistic advantages in obviating the need to carry other fuels to battle. And their lower flammability, in comparison with petrol, also greatly reduces fire hazards.”
The engine configuration is a liquid cooled, normally aspirated, 584cc (36 cu in) double overhead cam single with four valves per cylinder. Diesel fuel supply is through a special Fuel Injection unit and single injector developed specifically for the task and the Kawasaki-based combat bike produces a respectable 28 bhp at 5500 rpm with meaty flat power delivery from 1500 and 7000 rpm.
Unlike its gas-guzzling counterpart, the engine has multi-fuel compatibility and can use commercial diesel (inc low sulfer fuel), NATO Military Spec Diesel Fuel, Bio-Diesel (B20 or B100), Aviation Kerosene including JP4, JP5, JP8, and AVTR and plain old Kerosene.
And it’s a real 28 horses too – the bike recently set the world’s first land speed record for a diesel fuelled motorcycle.
Fred Hayes, founder of HDT, who was in the saddle at the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats , Utah, said: “The event was marred by rain the previous week and by poor track conditions, which limited the top speeds due to soft, wet salt. The bike was officially timed by the AMA at 85.466mph, against our calculated top speed of 86mph with production gearing. The calculated speed was at sea level (4350ft) on hard pavement. We’re delighted with the result. If we’d had an option for gearing and more track time, we may have broken the 90mph barrier.”
Fred does not rule out that the motorcycle may be made available for the consumer market. “Although the motorcycle is about 20-30% more expensive than a comparative conventional motorcycle, there would be cost savings for riders and environmental benefits in that the diesel motorcycle can do 110 miles per gallon - a little over twice the range of a conventional motorcycle,” said Fred.

In my part of the world, quad bikes (or ATVs) are everywhere. They're great for dropping in and out of the fields to check the vines, as well as hitting the road or dirt track for a bit of well-earned fun. Although there are quite powerful examples, for the most part quads are unlikely to generate the same kind of drool as, say, a Ducati superbike. That's certainly not true of Lazareth's Wazuma V8F - which is built around a 250 horsepower Ferrari 3 liter V8 engine, features a BMW gearbox and sports customized Brembo braking and Momo rims. As you've probably already worked out, though, this unique beast of a quad doesn't come cheap.

Based on the company's Wazuma R1 (which was built around a Yamaha R1 1000cc engine), the Wazuma V8F has two spaced front wheels and two attached/closed wheels at the rear - somewhat blurring the obvious lines between Spyder-like trikes and Venom Evil-like quad bikes. Built as a company showpiece and first displayed at Top Marques 2010 in Monaco, Ludovic Lazareth's one-off creation features a Ferrari 3.0L V8 engine that's capable of delivering 250 horsepower, a handlebar-controlled six-speed sequential gearbox from a BMW M3, and four made-to-measure horizontal shocks made by EMC.

The Ferrari-red-colored V8F quad weighs just 650 kg (1,433 pounds) and benefits from electric power steering, modified 18-inch Momo (+Power) rims with slick tires and Brembo calipers on four 324mm disc brakes. It's said to incorporate the injection system of two sport bike engines, electronically-controlled by a Sybelle system. There are eight intake funnels for 4 exhaust outlets and a huge cooling radiator. Engine management can be modified via a computer.
Custom car and motorcycle maker Lazareth - based in Annecy, France - is no stranger to demanding top prices for its custom creations, and has quite an exotic vehicle pedigree that includes designing and building the FZR Turbo motorcycle for the film Babylon AD and the supercharged Buell XB12S that impressed us back in 2007.

The company's Wazuma V8F is now up for sale for the asking price of EUR 200,000 (US$261,000), which is only a few thousand Euros less than the quoted European price of the forthcoming Ferrari 458 Spider sports car (EUR 226,800 in Europe/US$257,000 in the U.S.), but with the latter you'll get a 4.5 liter V8 engine, a top speed of just under 200 mph (320 km/h) and protection from less-than-dry weather conditions in the shape of an automated folding aluminum hard-top roof.
Before you jump in with checkbook in hand, though, you might want to get in touch with your local transport authority to make sure that the V8F is road legal where you intend to ride it. Honda's 750cc NM4 Vultus: A new species of motorcycle


Honda has announced a new motorcycle – the 750cc NM4, which will be known as the Vultus in European markets – and it's a new species of motorcycle that represents such a bold departure from tradition that it could become a landmark in the evolution of motorized two-wheeled transport.
The NM4 (NM stands for "New Motorcycle") is styled along “Japanimation” lines, and though the cult anime/manga bodywork is no doubt challenging to the eye of existing motorcycle enthusiasts, it’s not the styling that sets the NM4 apart – it's the combination of the very low seat height, semi-recumbent, feet-first rider posture, adjustable backrest and large futuristic dashboard to create what Honda describes as the seating position and cockpit of a “fighter pilot.”
At just 650 mm (25.5"), the seat height of the NM4 is much lower than anything we've ever seen before in a 750 cc class, mass production motorcycle an indication that Honda is intending to produce large capacity motorcycles for people less than 170 cm (5' 7") tall.

What's more, the NM4 has been designed for ease-of-use. It comes standard with Honda's proprietary Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and Combined Brake System that includes a dual-channel Anti Lock Brake system (ABS).
Between the two systems, the two most-difficult aspects of riding a motorcycle (braking and changing gear) have been reduced to scooter-like simplicity. At the same time, by removing the necessity to have the rider's feet at the foot controls of a traditional motorcycle, it is offering a great deal more choice about riding position (while the foot brake still exists, its use is optional because the brake lever on the right handlebar operates both front and rear brakes through the linked braking system).

Drawing heavily from the futuristic bikes seen in the anime/manga illustrated books, television series and films, it has many similarities to Shotaro Kaneda's bike from Akira, and the work of Katsuhiro Otomo.

2 - Vultus NM4: A very "New Motorcycle"

Just as technology freed the first generation of motorcycle riders from an array of hand throttles, advance-retard mechanisms and chokes a century ago, technology will now remove another layer of anachronistic control mechanisms left over from a prior generation.
My take is that the NM4 is designed by Honda to emancipate motorcycling one further step, to make riding a motorcycle as easy to ride as a scooter, and the Japanimation styling is just a sugar coating.
The introduction of a bike as radically non-traditional as the NM4 is brave new territory, even for a company with the resources of Honda. When announcing the bike at the Osaka Motorcycle Show, the synopsis in the first paragraph of the press kit read thus:
New model: A ground-breaking machine inspired by the desire to establish a unique riding experience and an identity not bound by standard motorcycle design, with strong echoes of futuristic bikes seen in Japanese movies. Created by a young design team who remained true to their original concept at every stage through to production, the NM4 Vultus brings radical style to the streets, with function from the future for a new breed of rider.

Then followed the carefully chosen words of Mr Keita Mikura, the Project Leader for the NM4 Vultus, which are worth considering in context. Kimura's brief statement is reproduced under the image above.
Given the lukewarm reception Honda experienced with the DN-01, it has every reason to be nervous about how the NM4/ Vultus will be received by its public. Mikura's above words suggest the company has decided to forge ahead in this direction regardless, and we can expect the NM4 to be on the market a lot longer than its direct predecessor – the DN-01 was announced in 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show, came to market in 2008 and was withdrawn in 2010. I was attendant at the 2005 launch of the DN-01, and I have no doubt that Honda thought the moment was a very significant one in its history.

The DN-01 (read Loz Blain's road test of the bike here) remains one of the very few large capacity motorcycles ever to have used an automatic transmission, in this case an ingenious CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which worked well and offered many benefits to learners and experienced riders alike but was largely misunderstood and lambasted by the traditional motorcycle media.
Much of the DNA of the Vultus can be found in the DN-01, with its semi-recumbent seating position, electronically-controlled "Human Friendly Transmission" and equally human-friendly, big V-twin motor. The DN-01's motor was built for mid-range and usability, not outright horsepower and performance, and was roundly criticized by the same motorcycle media for its lack of outright horsepower.
Given the reception of the DN-01 at the cash register, and the response of a motorcycle media staunchly resistant to any motorcycle without sporting aspirations, Honda's move in releasing the NM4 is to be roundly lauded. It has regrouped following the disappointment of the DN-01 and is backing its own judgement on the future evolution of the motorcycle regardless of the opinion of the current change-resistant enthusiasts and a myopic motorcycle press. It is hoping to use its corporate momentum to take motorcycle design in a more practical direction.

3 - Honda deliberately but gently breaks the traditional mold

Honda has thrown every bit of trickery and technology it can muster at the Vultus NM4 which combines both synthetic feel-good technologies and a full hand of electronic rider assistance technologies to make riding a motorcycle much easier. Honda's long term investment in R&D to develop expertise which gives it a competitive edge is being brought to bear to create the best possible user experience.

When Honda launched the CB750 nearly half a century ago, it created what enthusiasts commonly refer to as the UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle) – a four cylinder bike with smooth power delivery, but lacking the character which motorcycle enthusiasts held dear. It might seem like a no-brainer now to create a compact multi-cylinder motorcycle, but the first few thousand bikes shipped from Japan to America had sand-cast casings for good reason – Honda wasn't sure the bike would sell and did not wish to invest in the tooling required for serious mass production until it had proof that the motorcycle was viable at the cash register. The rest is history.

3-1 Honda's 750 parallel "faux" V-twin

Five decades on, and the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer is no longer smoothing the vibrations but purposefully infusing its machinery with characterful rumblings. It may have balancing shafts to remove annoying high frequency vibrations, but the primal rhythms of the Vultus are a critically important part of the primary design.
On the surface, the NM4 is powered by a SOHC 8-valve 750 cc parallel twin, similar in power output and capacity to the 650 cc Triumph Bonneville (35.8 kW @ 7200 rpm), 750 cc Norton Commando (43.8 kW @ 6800 rpm) and 650 cc BSA Lightning (35.8 kW @ 7000 rpm), which were kings of the road almost 50 years ago. By comparison, the 750cc Vultus stacks up well with 40.3 kW at 6,250 rpm with a far stronger low- and mid-range than the bikes which lost Britain's motorcycle empire.
In reality, Honda's parallel-twin engine has a 270 degree crank throw, which gives it the feel and sound of a V-twin. In building the NM4, Honda has combined all of the advantages of a V-twin, while conveniently canting its parallel twin forward to fit it neatly into the form factor it desired. The DN-01 had a big V-twin, the NM4 has a faux V-twin.
It's no co-incidence that most of the truly iconic motorcycles and those with massive cult followings have used the V-twin engine configuration.
From the iconic motorcycles of yore such as Indian, Brough Superior, the legendary Vincent Black Shadow, through to the most recent cult machinery such as Ducati, Buell/EBR, Victory and Confederate, and the Harley-Davidson marque which has endured a century based on a proprietary 45 degree design, all have used the uneven firing order of the V-twin to seduce their audience. V-twins offer a sweet, torquey mid-range, but it's the vibrational characteristics and intoxicating sound of a V-twin which are as much key factors in their allure as the engine's usability.
As hall-of-fame motorcycle designer Erik Buell recently told Ashack.blogspot.com, "motorcycles are a very emotional product and big v-twins sound cool ... sound is a key part of the experience for the rider."
The numbers speak for themselves: 17 of the 20 most expensive motorcycles ever sold at auction are V-twins, one is a flat twin BMW, and two are V4 Ducati MotoGP bikes. 100 percent are four-strokes, 95 percent have V-configuration engines and 85 percent are V-twins.

The 745 cc engine of the Vultus is largely identical to the 700 (actually 670 cc) engine already in use in Honda’s CTX700 and NC700, with the bore increased by 4 mm to 77 mm and the same 80 mm stroke for a swept volume of 745 cc.
We've been through the clever design of the canted compact Honda twin previously.
It's not a sports engine but one designed and specifically tuned for real world speeds and conditions. The additional benefits of the NM4's 10 percent engine capacity increase over the 670 cc motor used in the NX700 and CTX700 have resulted not in greater peak horsepower (as is customary with engine capacity increases), but in a punchier lower range, with peak torque of 68 Nm produced at just 4,750 rpm.
One final thought on the Vultus engine. While traditional motorcyclists might scoff at its less than sporting performance in comparison to the extreme sports motorcycles in the same capacity class, it is interesting to compare the NM4's engine performance with Honda's most famous motorcycle, the CB750, a motorcycle generally regarded as the first "superbike."
In terms of horsepower, the CB750 produced 50 kW @ 8,000 rpm, which is 24 percent more peak horsepower than NM4's 40.3 kW at a slightly more modest 6,250rpm.

In terms of torque, the NM4's 68 Nm @ 4,750 rpm is 13 percent more than the CB750's 60 Nm @ 7,000 rpm, and it produces that grunt much lower in the rev range.
In the real world, most CB750s averaged around 35-40 mpg and that is where the biggest single performance difference can be seen between the two – the NM4 delivers better than 80 mpg. That's miserly scooter-like gas-pump-performance from a motorcycle capable of outperforming any car this side of $100,000, and it'll easily leave a supercar behind without ever raising its revs beyond that torque-laden mid-range.
The NM4 is a rare motorcycle designed with a surfeit of common sense – a motorcycle for the real world. It might not cut superbike lap times, but in its natural habitat, it will be a far nicer traveling companion.

3-2 Honda's Dual Clutch Transmission

Honda has been seeking to make motorcycling simpler for a long time. It produced automatic versions of its 400 cc twin and 750 cc four cylinder road machines for a brief period in the late 1970s and I spent a week on the CB750A at that time and loved it. With an powerband restacked for low-range torque and two-speed Hondamatic gear-changing, it was simplicity personified – twist-and-go and enjoy the ride.
Even then, the trends Honda was watching in the United States car market suggested that motorcycles would one day be automatic, as automatic transmissions were taking over from stick-shifts in cars. Humans want simplicity it seems and by 1976 when Honda launched its automatic motorcycles, two thirds of new car sales were fitted with an automatic transmission.
The current percentage of new car sales in America with automatic transmissions is 92.5 percent. The staunchly traditional motorcycle marketplace did not however, feel the same way about the idea of an automatic motorcycle in the 1970s and the Honda CB750A only garnered a few thousand sales. It was shelved and it was another three decades before the Honda DN-01 emerged with another automatic. The DN-01's "Human Friendly Transmission" was a CVT, but regardless of what mechanisms it used to do its job, it was an automatic.
The Dual Clutch Transmission is different though. It uses two clutches: one for first, third and fifth gears, the other for second, fourth and sixth, with the mainshaft for both clutches concentric, and each independently controlled by its own electro-hydraulic circuit. When a gear change occurs, the system pre-selects the target gear using the clutch not currently in use. The first clutch is then electronically disengaged as, simultaneously, the second clutch engages.
Honda spent a lot of money and time developing its own DCT. It's the only motorcycle currently in production that uses a DCT, though quite a few manufacturers use dual clutch transmissions in their performance cars. Numerous models from Ferrari, Audi and Porsche, plus supercars such as the Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Huracan, McLaren MP4-12C, Mercedes SLS AMG, BMW M3, Nissan GT-R, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X use dual clutch transmissions and Lotus has just applied for a patent for a simplified DCT. With a list of DCT devotees of such quality, Honda's efforts in developing the only motorcycle DCT in existence seem more than justified. A DCT does it faster and more efficiently and smoother. Q.E.D.

Traditional motorcycle enthusiasts love to pedal a manual gearbox, loading up the gear shift lever and flicking the throttle off momentarily for a fast gear change under acceleration. The irony is that novices will be able to change gears faster and smoother on the NM4 because the co-ordination of swapping cogs efficiently is done with technology, not with human clumsiness. Put two riders of equal weight, reflexes and co-ordination on two otherwise identical bikes, one with a manual gearbox and one with DCT, and the rider of the DCT bike will be faster over a quarter mile. Similarly, when hurtling into a corner and downshifting under brakes, enthusiasts love the challenge of getting it right by blipping the throttle and matching the revs to avoid the rear wheel chirping, as there's nothing quite like mastering a big motorcycle to make you feel king of the universe. Beginners will be able to achieve the same feeling and results without the same degree of riding expertise on the NM4 – another reason enthusiasts will hate it.
The DCT delivers a quick, smooth, consistent, seamless gear change conducted by a computer that is better than any human can orchestrate with a clutch, throttle and shift-pedal ... every time, no brainpower required. As the transmission transfers drive from one gear to the next with infinitesimal interruption of the power to the rear wheel, there is no gear change shock, and pitching of the machine is minimized, making the change feel direct as well as smooth.
The NM4 does not have a clutch lever or shift pedal. Automatic D mode is ideal for city riding, and offers the best fuel economy. Automatic S mode is sportier and the ECU lets the engine rev higher before shifting up and shifts down sooner when decelerating for extra engine braking. In either D or S mode, the DCT offers manual intervention – the rider simply selects the required gear using the up and down shift triggers on the left handlebar. It's not immediate, but soon after you've told it you want to go up or down a gear, it will shift seamlessly into that gear. Thanks to engine mapping and a well-programmed ECU, the DCT is designed to seamlessly revert back to automatic mode when it decides the excitement is over, using a number of parameters (throttle opening, vehicle speed and gear position) to make that decision. If you're a purist or a control freak, the Vultus will piss you off big time.
Furthermore, in D mode, the DCT system detects variations in rider input typical to certain environments, from busy urban streets to mountain switchbacks, and adapts its gear change schedule accordingly to create an extra level of riding compatibility. Motorcycling newbies raised on game systems will love these adaptive features, traditionalists will not.

3-3 Honda's combined brake system and dual-channel anti-lock brakes

Stopping a motorcycle is a difficult business for the uninitiated. Unlike with automobiles where you simply press one pedal to operate all four brakes, motorcycles usually have independent braking – one brake for the front wheel, controlled with the right handlebar lever, and one for the rear wheel, controlled with the right foot. Curiously, the brake on the right handlebar lever must be operated with the same hand as the throttle twist-grip, which is also on the right handlebar – one of those "we've always done it that way" design throwbacks which would not pass muster in usability testing these days. The majority of braking on a motorcycle, around 70-80 percent, is done with the front wheel, though the rear is important in stabilizing the bike and reducing the forward pitching under heavy braking.
This forward pitching under braking changes the geometry, and can catch an inexperienced rider out, and though an experienced rider can vary the braking power applied to each wheel for the best results in different conditions, it's a minefield for newbies. With long travel suspension and powerful brakes, controlling a motorcycle in a crash stop situation on slippery road surfaces has brought many a newbie to their knees (and hands and face).
Honda's Combined Brake System aims to automatically generate an ideal balance of braking power to each wheel, achieving expert level braking with one hand. Once more, it does so with no brainpower required.
Yes, Vale, Jorge and Marc are better with two independent brakes, but there are only two problems: most riders are nowhere near as good as the aforementioned, and all riders like to think they are. Automating the difficult and critical bits of riding a motorcycle makes sense, and stopping a motorcycle is a critical business because the human body is both frail and vulnerable, particularly at speed on a motorcycle. This is indeed a matter of life and death.
Honda's combined braking systems only employ one front disk for some reason (presumably a logical one) despite the seemingly obvious engineering benefits of two front discs generating symmetrical forces through the fork legs. I'm prepared to back that Honda's single front 320 mm disc, two-piston brake caliper set-up and single rear 240 mm disc and single-piston caliper with the aforementioned technological cunning applied, are more than up to the task.

3-4 The recumbent feet-forward riding position

Like almost every idea under the sun, there is "prior art" regarding recumbent feet-first seating positions but not from a manufacturer with gravitas. Most feet-forward motorcycle manufacturers (Quasar, Alligator, Ner-a-car, Acerbion, Swiss Zerotracer, ad infinitum) have sold dozens of motorcycles. Honda sells 22 million motorcycles a year.
Not one recumbent (feet-forward) motorcycle has ever never seen mass production. Until now! The Vultus is the closest motorcycle yet to the "feet forward" definition. Honda has indicated the Vultus will be available to buy this year (2014), and Honda doesn't do small production runs, so the new Vultus might well influence the form-factor of the motorcycle in a big way if its distinctive aesthetics catch on.

The Vultus has the most pronounced feet-forward riding position yet seen on a mass production motorcycle and a very low seat height of just 650 mm. By comparison, the Suzuki Burgman’s seat height is 755 mm, the Aprilia RSV 850’s seat is 780mm high, the Yamaha T-Max 530’s seat height is 800 mm and the BMW 650 GT runs to 805 mm, and they are all bikes that have paid a lot of attention to getting a very low seat height in the first place. Non-traditional technologies and shapes haven't sold all that well in the past, but there are now growing imperatives for motorcycle manufacturers to begin melding car-like feature sets with their motorcycles for non-enthusiast riders, and we're likely to see more non-traditional motorcycles like the Vultus appearing in the not-too-distant future. Yamaha and Suzuki have shown many concept bikes in a similar mold, but none apart from the Yamaha Maxam Morphous ever saw production – the Morphous lasted just two years on the showroom floor before it was shelved.

The Vultus is designed for the next generation motorcyclist, with a very low seat, recumbent riding position, and ease-of-use foremost. As can be seen from its concept bikes (more inside), Honda has been gauging opinion as to when to embody these ideas into a production motorcycle for decades. Do not discount the possibility the Vultus will be offered with an optional Elysium-style roof within one or two model updates
On this point, the low seat height and the angle of the Vultus windscreen suggest to me that a folding roof is the next logical step for the Vultus if it gains acceptance and begins selling. The seat is low enough to accommodate a rider under a roof line which continued onwards from the screen (as with the Elysium concept it showed at Tokyo Motor Show in 2001), and it would be the final factor that would complete a two-wheeler capable of delivering car-like weather protection. Honda has indicated that a taller screen will be available as an option for the Vultus/NM4 though it has not been shown at this stage. A taller screen could facilitate an even better roof line.
This article will no doubt generate a bit of controversy about whether the Vultus actually constitutes a feet-forward motorcycle, so we've used the term recumbent motorcycle as much as possible to try to focus on the issues.

The Vultus sits somewhere between a normal maxi-scooter and a full feet-forward motorcycle. Malcolm Newell, inventor of the Qasar and feet-forward design evangelist, after being continually asked if choppers were feet-forward motorcycles, proposed a definition that feet-forward motorcycles should have "a seat base less than 20 inches (500 mm) from the ground."
By Newell's definition, the Vultus' 650 mm seat height means the Vultus is not a feet-forward motorcycle, even allowing 50-100 mm of padding on top of its v-shaped seat base. It is however, significantly closer to Newell's definition than anything before it from a major manufacturer, and Newell's definition is largely arbitrary anyway, perhaps motivated by a wish to ensure his futuristic designs didn't fall into the same category as customized choppers.
Hence the Vultus seat height will be greatly appealing to the large population of existing scooter riders in Asia who are getting wealthier faster than the rest of the world. By comparison with existing traditional motorcycles, the Vultus will be a lot easier to control at the traffic lights for smaller riders, and with the pillion seat which flips up into an adjustable backrest, Honda’s claims of a “fighter pilot” seating position seem well founded.

4 - The imperatives of convergence

Aware that the world of personal transportation is changing globally due to ever-increasing fuel prices and traffic congestion, Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki have all been exploring the right formula for new models that will attract more customers from the potentially much larger non-enthusiast segment with concept models offering more comfort, ease-of-use, economy, safety and weather-protection.

5 In summary

The NM4 appears to finally consummate the long-standing efforts of the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer toward designing motorcycles with greater ease-of-use so it can attract to a new generation of rider considering two-wheels for its low cost-of-ownership (primarily fuel consumption) and the ability of a narrow-track vehicle with a small footprint to ride through the ever-increasing traffic congestion on our roads.

Clarification re the name of the Vultus NM4

Announced at the Osaka Motorcycle Show, the press materials from different arms of the Honda empire appear to be conflicting about what to expect. Honda Europe has announced the Vultus as being produced only in black, while Honda’s Japanese headquarters is referring to the bikes as different models, dubbed NM4-1 and NM4-2 respectively, with one presented in pearlescent white and coming standard with integrated panniers in the rear.
Ashacks Team attended the Tokyo Motorcycle Show last weekend and reported that the name Vultus was not used by Honda in any context – all references to the bike were the black NM4-1 and white NM4-2.
Though Honda Japan is touting the bikes as different versions, the integration of carrying capacity appears to be the major, indeed, the only difference, and panniers will be optional on the all-black Vultus anyway. The images of the white prototype may hence be of a machine which doesn’t carry the name Vultus when it appears
