Windows 7 Still Dominating OS Market Followed By Windows XP

By : Unknown
It’s less than a week before Microsoft pulls the plug on Windows XP, but it doesn’t look like Microsoft’s attempts to get people off the operating system has made a significant impact. NetMarketshare just released the latest data on operating system market shares, which only goes to show that the outdated operating system really is still close to the hearts of users.
The report shows that Windows definitely dominates the market, as we all know. At 90.94%, that pretty much leaves everyone else eating Windows’s dust.
Windows 7 Still Dominating OS Market Followed By Windows XP
When it comes to the various flavors of Windows, however, Windows XP holds a significant 27.69% market share. Windows dominates with 48.77%, followed (far behind) by Windows 8 (6.41%), Windows 8.1 (4.89%), and Windows Vista (2.99%). I wonder who still uses Windows Vista???
Those shares are not that surprising at all, but what’s interesting is the growth of each the operating systems. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have grown, collectively, at 0.62 percentage points. If you look at them individually, though, Windows 8 practically has no growth with 0.03 percentage points, while Windows 8.1 has 0.59 percentage points.
Here’s the zinger: Windows 7 has outperformed everyone else with a 1.46 rise in percentage points.
Windows XP

Considering that it has only been five months since Windows 8.1 was released, one could argue that the numbers could change in its favor this year, especially since its growth has been steady, albeit slow. Additionally, we cannot ignore the rumors that Microsoft is working on a free version of Windows 8.1, and if that comes to fruition, the operating system’s adoption rate will in all likelihood grow even more. After all, everyone likes a free deal, yeah?
As can be expected, Windows Vista’s share has dropped, and while the “say bye to Windows XP” campaign may not have been as successful as Microsoft has hoped, the operating system has dropped by 1.84 percentage points.
Which version of Windows are you using? Why?

Microsoft Changes Privacy Policy – They Won’t Snoop On Emails Anymore

By : Unknown
Privacy is always a touchy thing, whether or not you have something to hide. And when people in “power” do invade privacy in one way or another, the proverbial excrement does hit the spinning blades. Last week, the case of Microsoft snooping on a Hotmail user’s emails because of suspected “trafficking of stolen Microsoft source code” hit the grapevine, and as could be expected, outrage was the result.
privacy policy
Microsoft has been quick to react to this, however, with Brad Smith, the General Counsel & Executive Vice President, Legal & Corporate Affairs of the company publishing a blog post dealing with the issue. He mentions that Microsoft has made changes to its privacy policy, to the effect that they will not be snooping on their users’ Hotmail accounts anymore when legal issues – piracy included – arise.
Instead, Microsoft will immediately hand the reins over to law enforcement. Straight from the horse’s mouth:
Effective immediately, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property from Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves. Instead, we will refer the matter to law enforcement if further action is required.
Obviously, this does not mean that illicit activities will go unhindered. It’s just that Microsoft, as a private entity, will not invade an individual’s privacy even if suspicions arise.
It’s worth pointing out, though, that Smith stands by their right to search their users’ emails if necessary. However, he played the “we listen to our customers” card, and passes the buck to law enforcement and whatever legal procedures they may have in place.
One can look at this move from two perspectives.
One, Microsoft is respecting its users’ privacy.
Two, Microsoft is merely shifting the responsibility so that they don’t have to directly deal with potential backlash of inspecting private emails.
How do you feel about this change in Microsoft’s privacy policy?

This RC Dragon Flies Through The Air & Breathes Fire

By : Unknown
Whether it’s because of the popularity of video games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, or television shows such as Game of Thrones, or even Hollywood movies such as How to Train Your Dragon, one thing is clear: dragons are insanely popular right now. And, it’s a safe bet that more than a few people would like to get their hands on the mythical creature. Unfortunately, as we all know, living and fire-breathing dragons are a bit rare to come by. But that doesn’t stop people, namely those from Hammacher Schlemmer from trying to turn their dreams into reality.
I’m here to tell you that you can actually buy a dragon that flies through the air and is also able to breathe fire from its mouth. (Unfortunately, it costs more than many new cars).
This RC Dragon Flies Through The Air & Breathes Fire
The “Toy” That Will Frighten The Neighborhood
As you might imagine, this thing is no average remote controlled vehicle. For one thing, once it’s airborne it will soar through the skies at a speed of 70 MPH. When it’s not in the sky, it actually breathes real fire out of its mouth. And forget rechargeable batteries – this beast is powered by a half-gallon of jet fuel which allows it to terrorize the town for a full 10 minutes at a time.
In case you’re wondering how this dragon can fly in the first place, it has a small jet turbine on its back (of course it does) which shoots out a thrust of around 500 MPH. If flight wasn’t enough in the first place, its head also turns, its eyes glow red, and when it does shoot flames, it shoots them out at a distance of 3 feet. It also has a 9 foot wingspan.
If you find yourself wondering how much this medieval dragon costs, let’s go ahead and get it out the way. It’ll cost you $60,000. Oh well, it’s nice to dream every once in a while.

Sony Selling Waterproof Walkman Inside A Bottle Of Water

By : Unknown
Most people probably listen to music on-the-go through their smartphone nowadays but there is still a niche market for MP3 players. Sony wants to capitalize on this and is targeting consumers who want to listen to music underwater.
Smartphones are not cheap and so for some places they are simply a no-go. Sony wants you to be able to enjoy your favourite tunes underwater and have designed a waterproof MP3 player. To prove just how waterproof it is, the company has decided to sell the device inside a bottle of water.
Waterproof Walkman
As well as proving the point, it is also an ingenious marketing tactic. Although the idea of listening to music under water is not a new one, it is still not that popular. Sony hope that by having vending machines that provide an MP3 player stored in water, enough curiosity will be aroused in people, motivating them to buy one.
Priced at $99, this Walkman is not the cheapest MP3 out there but purchasing it through a vending machine and then taking it out of the wet packaging, certainly beats ordering it from a retailer; that’s just boring!

OCZ Create Lightning Fast 3.2 TB SSD

By : Unknown
Toshiba purchased OCZ last month for $35 million after OCZ were bankrupt.  OCZ are starting shipments of a new line of solid-state drives (SSD’s), which offer a maximum storage capacity of 3.2TB.  The Z-Drive 4500 range of Solid State Drives ship in capacities of 800GB and 1.6TB.  The new SSD’s are manufactured using the Japanese company’s latest developing process.
zdrive_4500_lrg
OCZ does already offer 3.2TB drives with the Z-Drive R4 SSD range, but the new drives are quicker, OCZ said in a statement. You may want to break into your savings account if you plan to purchase one though as the 3.2TB drive is priced at $6,533, the 1.6TB at $3,806 and 800GB at $2,355. This SSD range offers endurance of 2.5PB and random read times of 252,000 IOPS and random write times of up to 76,000 IOPS.
The Z-Drive 4500 SSD connects through a PCI-Express slot.  The SSD also uses software as a tool to increase the speed of read/write operations.  OCZ is also bundling Windows Accelerator software, which manages the SSD storage when it is functioning as cache. Other software bundled with the SSD is OCZ’s VXL virtualization software that manages deployment of virtual machines across blocks in SSD arrays.  This process minimizes resource waste. The virtualization software ensures quicker deployments of Virtual Machines and faster read/ write times.
OCZ New SSD
At 3.2TB, OCZ are offering the maximum storage capacity available in Solid State Drive. SSD’s are quickly catching up to optical drives, which have reached a maximum capacity of 6TB. SSD’s, however, still remain more expensive to produce and purchase, than hard drives do.
Scott Harlin, director of marketing communications for enterprise at OCZ, said, OCZ will continue to offer its own line of SSD’s and nothing has been affected by Toshiba’s acquisition of the firm.  “Toshiba will continue to develop, produce, and market their own line of Toshiba-branded SSD’s while we will focus on developing, producing and marketing OCZ-branded SSD’s that leverage our in-house technology.”
OCZ’s SSD’s are what is known as MLC (multi-level cell), in which multiple bits are stored into one cell. The drive is also equipped with security and it has features to protect data in case of a power surge/outage. It is interesting to note that the drivers for the SSD for Windows and Linux have been rebuilt from the ground up. Also OCZ is offering a five-year warranty with the new products, which should quash any worries which people have regarding the reliability of OCZ drives.

Battery-Box Provides Macbooks With Up To 12 Hours Use

By : Unknown
All of our latest gadgets today need some sort of power to operate and that means, inevitably, that they will run out of power sooner or later.  In the case of mobile devices such as tablets, phones and laptops that time period is, unfortunately, sooner.  So a backup battery, charger or power device is a must have addition in today’s tech savvy world.
GBatteries Smart BatteryOS
It’s a good thing then those clever folks over a BatteryBox are trying to make life a little easier then isn’t it?  BatteryBox is the hottest gadget to offer additional power on demand. The device is notable for two reasons: the sheer amount of power it offers in its small packaging and how long the BatteryBox will last before the batteries inside begin to degrade.
First off, the power capabilities: Maker Gbatteries Systems Inc. claims the 50Whr BatteryBox is competent enough to power a MacBook Air for 12 hours, a MacBook Pro for 6 hours, or can recharge 8 iPhones before it needs recharging again. The BatteryBox device itself takes 9 hours to reach full capacity using a micro USB charger. You can halve those times by switching to a 2A power supply, if you desire.
The cost is $139.  I agree it is a lot to spend on a backup battery, but the reason for the price is quite relevant , Gbatteries have created and developed,BatteryOS; a smart battery management system.  Gbatteries has developed BatteryOS to control the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries inside the BatteryBox for a more effiecient life cycle.
This system allows for 4x higher cycle life and that means 3,000 charge/discharge cycles will retain a 96 percent capacity. Users can typically expect to get 5 years of use without any battery degradation. BatteryOS can dynamically manage the batteries and the BatteryOS is always managing the energy inside a battery to ensure that it doesn’t degrade like an unmanaged battery will do.
The BatteryBox uses a MagSafe2 adapter to power MacBooks.  When I say power it, I mean just that as the BatteryBox doesn’t charge the battery, it just provides power. The BateryBox also has an adapter which allows it to be unlocked so it can be used by any device that allows USB charging. The device measures 0.98 x 2.63 x 3.55-inches and weighs 250 grams. Inside is a 50Whr, 12,000mAh battery pack.  The price is $139 with the first shipments occurring sometime in the 3rd quarter.

Traffic Cameras In Miami Don’t Work

By : Unknown
I am not really a fan of traffic cameras. Don’t get me wrong, I understand their purpose and think they can definitely help out sometimes, but I also think they’re more trouble than they’re worth. For one thing, they make me slightly paranoid, especially if I go through a yellow light that turns red when I’m halfway through it. Almost every time that happens I wonder to myself if I’m going to get a ticket in the mail for running a red light. It hasn’t happened, (yet) and I’m thankful for that, but it doesn’t make me any less worried. (And for all those wondering, I try not to blast my way through yellow lights. Sometimes it just happens).
Traffic Cameras In Miami Don't Work
Andrey Rainey, a 20 year-old student from Florida, probably doesn’t like traffic cameras very much right now either. He recently received a ticket in the mail from a traffic camera in Miami, Florida. Here’s the problem – Rainey has never been to Miami, and neither has his vehicle. So how’d he get the ticket? Well, a license plate which looked like his was caught on camera and he was the lucky vehicle owner to get a citation.
Talk About A Blurred Photo
When Rainey received the ticket in the mail, they also helpfully included a photo of his license plate to prove that it was his vehicle in case he wanted to question it. After his initial shock, he looked at the image and noticed how blurry it really was. He also noticed that the back of the vehicle was a lot more rounded, more like a car’s bumper than the truck that he drives. And while looking at the license plate photo, it was really hard to tell if the 4th letter was an O, Q, or a D.
Traffic Cameras Aren't Perfect (Gasp!)
Rainey decided to call the court to let them know they might’ve got the wrong guy. They told him he’d have to deal with the court in Miami. So now, this student from Orlando with 2 jobs is trying to find a way to afford getting to Miami to fight a ticket which probably never belonged to him in the first place.
But at least the traffic camera caught someone breaking the law – now if it can only find the right person.
What do you think? Do you believe traffic cameras are effective?

Record Breaking 188 mph RC Car

By : Unknown
Remote control extremist, Nic Case, has won the world record for fastest RC car in the world.  Nicknamed, the RC Bullet, this small but mighty car can reach over 188 mph.  This is even faster than cars like the Camero Z and Jaguar F-Type: full size sport’s cars!  Only one-tenth scale car, it is the fastest RC car ever seen.
Nic Case previously won the world record for RC cars land speed so it should not be a big surprise that he broke his own record.  He is a man who loves speedy cars.
Nic's 2010 Car
Nic’s 2010 Car

The RC Bullet has been custom designed and built to be as lightweight as possible without ruining the integrity of strength.  The car weighs 10lbs and the electric motors can generate 10 horsepower.
The main issue when building this car was transferring the power of the engine into the wheels.  Because there is so much power and the car moves so fast, it was a challenge to keep the car on the ground.  He got around this by creating a low-profile, scoop-shaped body, along with larger (3 inches) tyres to counter the vehicle’s shape.
Because the car is moving so quickly and the motor is spinning so fast, a gyroscopic effect is created.  This threatens to throw the car off target.  To counter this effect, he added a heavy brass weight to the drive shaft.  This counters the motor inertia.  At top speed, the wheels spin at almost 20,000 rpm.
Case firmly believes he can eventually get his car to a top speed of 200 mph.  Watching the video, you can barely see the vehicle streak by.  However, even though it is only 10 lbs, the car has enough kinetic energy to break your leg, if you get in the way.

This Philips Alarm Clock Simulates Sunlight To Wake You

By : Unknown
Waking up is not usually most people’s favourite part of the day. In fact, given a poll, I would bet that most people would vote it as their least favourite moment of the day. There’s just something about waking up that usually makes a person want to go right back to sleep – especially if it’s the alarm clock that brings them out of their slumber. I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely found that to be true within my own life. And while I’ve never been much on the snooze button, I do sometimes lay there just to spite my alarm. This is especially true when the alarm clock rings and it’s still dark outside.
Most alarm clocks do the same thing in the same way. You set them to wake you at a certain time, and using whatever obnoxious sounds they come programmed with, that’s exactly what they try to do. But they’re not always effective, because we’re usually not feeling ready to wake up when they go off. And while that’s hardly the alarm’s fault, it seems like there could be some improvement nonetheless. Thankfully, there’s now an alarm that won’t just simply wake you with an annoying beep, but will also wake you with pleasant simulated sunlight.
This Philips Alarm Clock Simulates Sunlight To Wake You
No More “Snoozing” The Morning Away
The Philips HF3500/60 Wake-Up Light does exactly what it sounds like it should do; it wakes you up with light. Don’t get me wrong, it’ll still beep, but you probably won’t need it to. You set the time you’d like it to wake you up, and it will start lighting your room 30 minutes before that time. If, by chance, you’re not awake by the aforementioned time, it will beep just like any other alarm clock.
I have to admit – this clock sounds really appealing to me. I’d much rather be woken by light than by a loud noise reminding me of everything I have to get done in the day. If you’d like to purchase one of these, be prepared to spend around $90.

ii Earphones Snap Strap Keep Earphones From Falling Out

By : Unknown
In this day and age, a quality pair of earphones (or earbuds, headphones, whatever you want to call them) are essential to get through the day. If you use public transportation to get to work, then there’s a fair chance that you listen to music during your commutes. If you work out, there’s a good chance that you listen to music as you’re running on the treadmill. To make a long story short, you get the point – most all of us love to listen to music to get us through our days and our nights. But what we don’t all love is the hassle that inevitably comes with using earphones.
It doesn’t matter who you are – if you use in-ear earphones, you’ve experienced them falling out of your ear at one time or another – it’s a commonality we all share. Whether you’re working out at the gym or walking down the street, it doesn’t take much at all for those pesky earphones to fall out of your ear(s). Thankfully, someone decided to do something about it through Indiegogo via the ii Earphones Snap Strap.
ii Earphones Snap Stap Keep Earphones From Falling Out
Such A Simple Idea That It’s Profound
The thing is, this Snap Strap isn’t all that big of a breakthrough, and it seems like something like this would’ve been thought of years ago. It’s a pretty straightforward device – there’s a silicone-like strap that goes around the back of your neck that the wires from the earphones slide into, securing them in place. Once it’s around your neck, the strap will absorb most of the impact from any movements you make, thereby allowing your earphones to stay where they belong – in your ears.
The Snap Strap also makes it a whole lot easier to talk to someone while you’re listening to music. Instead of taking out the earphones and shoving them into a pocket somewhere, all you have to do is let them hang around your neck until you’re ready to use them again. And don’t worry, they won’t get tangled anymore, either.
The Snap Straps have already met their original crowd-funding goal of $1,000. As of right now, they’ve raised $31,631 and still have 25 days left in the campaign. And in case you’re wondering, yes – they do come in a multitude of colors.
